Italian painter. Born in Bologna, he studied at the art school there and spent the rest of his life there. In 1914 he exhibited at a Futurist exhibition and participated in the Metaphysical movement from 1918 to 1920, but he was not very active in the Italian art movement and thereafter isolated himself and devoted himself to his work. In landscape painting he owes much to Cézanne and Corot, while in still life he relies on the plasticity of Giotto and the early Renaissance, capturing images with simplified outlines and creating an intellectual, meditative world of painting with thick oil paintings using cool colors such as white, gray, and brown as the main colors. He also produced many prints and watercolors. [Ogawa Hiroshi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
