A district of Watari Town, Watari County, in southern Miyagi Prefecture. Formerly Arahama Town. Located on the south bank of the mouth of the Abukuma River. After 1671 (Kanbun 11), when the Eastern Sea Route was opened, Arahama Port became its base, and rice and timber from the Tenryo and Sendai Domain territories along the river were collected there. As a base for transporting inland rice tribute to Edo, it was known as one of the two major ports of the Sendai Domain along with Ishinomaki, and was later connected to Sendai by an inland canal called Teizanbori. After the railway was opened, it became a fishing port. Arahama Port is located on a lagoon called Tori-no-umi, and the surrounding area is popular for swimming, fishing, marine sports, and bird watching of migratory birds.
