Rufous rat-kangaroo

An animal of the mammalian class, marsupial order, family Kangarooidae. It is found in eastern Australia. It is the largest of the mouse kangaroos, with a head and body length of 52 cm and a tail length of 38 cm. The upper part of its body is reddish-brownish gray and the underside is sooty white. It mainly lives in grasslands and woodlands. It is nocturnal and feeds on grass and the roots and rhizomes of various plants. It usually gives birth to one baby, which it raises in a pouch. Currently, its numbers are decreasing and it is a protected species.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱有袋目カンガルー科の動物。オーストラリア東部に分布する。ネズミカンガルー類のなかでもっとも大きく、頭胴長52センチメートル、尾長38センチメートル。体の上面は赤褐色を帯びた灰色で、下面はすすけた白色である。おもに草原や森林地に生息する。夜行性で、草や種々の植物の根、地下茎などを食べる。普通1産1子で、子は育児嚢(のう)の中で育てられる。現在では数が減り、保護の対象となっている。
