It was distinguished from the boatman who was employed to actually operate the ship, called the oki-sento. Usually, the owner of two or more merchant ships gave the oki-sento the authority to operate the ship and conduct business transactions. 〘名〙 江戸時代、船に乗らない廻船の所有者、すなわち船主。雇われて実際に船を運航する船頭を沖船頭と呼ぶのと区別した。通常二艘以上の廻船所有者で、沖船頭に運航、商売上の取引などの権限を与えた。おりせんどう。※浦手形‐寛政元年(1789)六月一八日「居船頭吉三郎代彌左衛門十四日暮方着被致」
