Boatman - Isen-do

Japanese: 居船頭 - いせんどう

〘Noun〙 In the Edo period, the owner of a merchant ship who did not actually sail the ship, i.e. the shipowner. It was distinguished from the boatman who was employed to actually operate the ship, called the oki-sento. Usually, the owner of two or more merchant ships gave the oki-sento the authority to operate the ship and conduct business transactions.
