Italian novelist and playwright. Influenced by naturalism (known as verismo in Italy), he started out with works inspired by life in his native Sicily. After writing works on themes such as the ambiguity of truth in the delicate space between reality and fiction, madness and sanity, and self-identity in crisis, he eventually arrived at works that destroyed the theatrical form itself, such as removing the boundaries between the stage and the audience, and between the actors and the audience. His representative works include the plays Six Characters in Search of an Author and Enrico IV, and the novel The Late Mattia Pascal. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934.

イタリアの小説家，劇作家。自然主義（イタリアでは〈ベリズモ〉と呼ばれる）の影響下に，故郷シチリアの生活に題材を得た作品によって出発。現実と虚構，狂気と正気の微妙なはざまにあって曖昧となる〈真実〉，危機にさらされる自己同一性などを主題とした作品を経て，やがて舞台と客席，俳優と観客のあいだの境界をとり去るなど，演劇形式そのものを破壊するような作品に到達した。代表作として戯曲《作者を捜す６人の登場人物》《エンリコ４世》，小説《故マッティア・パスカル》など。1934年ノーベル文学賞。
