A hill in the south-central part of Kanagawa Prefecture overlooking Sagami Bay. It is roughly diamond-shaped, measuring 12km east to west and 8km north to south. The name of the hill is derived from the name of an ancient district in Sagami Province, and is said to mean "the place where the earth is lifted up." In 1896, Toya District merged with the neighboring Osumi District to form Naka District, and the district name disappeared. The hill is often called the Oiso Hills, after the name of Oiso Town, which occupies the southeastern part of the area. The hills belong to Oiso Town, Ninomiya Town, and Odawara City in Naka District on the coast, and to Hiratsuka City, and Nakai Town and Oi Town in Ashigarakami District in the inland area.
