Yule, Sir Henry
Born: May 1, 1820, Midlothian, Scotland
[Died] December 30, 1889, London. British historical geographer. His father was a soldier in the service of the British East India Company, and he himself served in India as an engineer (1840-62). During that time he traveled to Burma as a member of the Fayer Mission in 1855. After returning to Japan in 1875, he contributed to the development of research on the historical geography of Indian governance as a council member of the Council of India and the Hakluyt Society, and also studied medieval travel writings. His works include Cathay and the Way Thither (2 volumes, 66) and The Book of Ser Marco Polo (2 volumes, 71).

Died April 8, 1697. Copenhagen. Danish military officer and admiral. During the Danish-Swedish War (1658-60) and the Scanian War (1675-79), he led many naval victories for Denmark, despite the country's inferior army, and destroyed the Swedish fleet.

[Died] December 27, 1802. Copenhagen. Danish painter. He trained in Hamburg, and returned to Copenhagen in 1765, where he worked as a court painter. He traveled to Rome, Paris, Geneva, and other places, painting portraits in each place, and returned to Japan in 1880. He became a member of the Academy, and later its president.
