Kemari - Kemari

Japanese: 蹴鞠 - けまり
Kemari - Kemari
〘 noun 〙① A ball played by kicking. Made from tanned deerskin, it is seven or eight inches (about 21-24 centimeters) in diameter. A game. ※Jikyoushu (1245) "Kemari" ※Fusinjojo (1403) "Their young descendants were given a poem on a paper and a kemari."② A game played mainly at the Imperial Court and among nobles since ancient times. Usually eight people wear leather shoes and kick a deerskin ball with the top of their feet, passing it around without letting it drop to the ground. Competitors competed not only on the number of kicks they could make, but also on the grace of the ball's trajectory and the kicker's posture. It was usually performed in a garden called a kikutsubo or kakare , measuring seven and a half ken (about 14 meters) square, with a cherry tree planted in the northeast corner, a willow in the southeast, a maple in the southwest , and a pine in the northwest. During the Kamakura period, around the time of Emperor Gotoba, it became systematized, and there were schools such as the Naniwa school and the Asukai school, but the Asukai family, whose founder was Gakyo, became mainstream throughout the Muromachi and Edo periods, and flourished as the Shogun's master's family. Shuukiku. *From the story book Harubukuro (1777), Jiji: "The origins of kemari lie in the nobles of Kyoto called the Asakai."
