Jalandhar - Jalandhar (English spelling)

A commercial and industrial city in the central part of Punjab state in northwest India. It is also called Jullundur. It is the capital of Jalandhar district. It has a population of 701,223 (2001). It is located about 420 km northwest of the capital Delhi, on the national highway leading to Pakistan in the central part of the plain between the Sutlej and Beas rivers. The city has had a long history of cotton textile industry, but after independence it became known as a producer of agricultural machinery and implements. In the 7th century it flourished as the capital of the Jalandhar Kingdom. It came under the control of the Sikh Kingdom in 1766, and came under British influence in 1846.

インド北西部、パンジャーブ州の中部にある商工業都市。ジュルンドゥルJullundurともいう。ジャランダル県の県都。人口70万1223（2001）。首都デリーの北西約420キロメートル、サトレジ、ベアース両河川間平原の中央部のパキスタンへ通じる国道沿いに位置する。古くより綿織物業の発達がみられたが、独立後は農業機械器具の生産地としても知られるようになった。7世紀にはジャランダル王国の首都として栄えた。1766年シク教徒王国の支配地となり、1846年にイギリスの勢力下に入った。
