?-1157 Prince of ancient Russia. Son of Grand Prince Vladimir Monomakh of Kiev, he became Prince of Rostov-Suzdal in 1125. He built the foundations of the Rostov-Suzdal principality by establishing Moscow and other projects, and at the same time, as his nickname Dolgoruky (long arm) suggests, he not only sought to control Kiev and Pereyaslavl (now Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky), but also sought to establish influence in Novgorod and other cities. In 1155, he succeeded in taking control of Kiev again, but was poisoned in 1157. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
