A group of uninhabited volcanic islands located in the southern South Pacific, about 470 km south of New Zealand's South Island. Territory of New Zealand. Area 612 km2. The main island is Auckland Island (area 464 km2). Discovered by a British whaling ship in 1806, it served as a whaling base until 1852. Attempts to settle there at the end of the 19th century failed. Currently, it is designated as a nature conservation area for seabirds and marine mammals. The name of the islands comes from the Governor-General of India, Earl of Auckland. [Taniuchi Tatsu] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
