...A photographic plate for far-ultraviolet rays with wavelengths of 200 nm or less. It is mainly used for vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopes. It was first made by the German physicist Victor Schumann (1841-1913) and was named after his use in research into far-ultraviolet rays. In ordinary silver halide emulsions, the gelatin used as a binder strongly absorbs ultraviolet rays below about 210 nm, so sensitivity in this wavelength range is extremely low. If all the gelatin is removed, the silver halide grains cannot be held on the support and development will not occur normally, so the minimum amount of gelatin necessary is used in Schumann plates. ...
