...A photographic plate for far-ultraviolet rays with wavelengths of 200 nm or less. It is mainly used for vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopes. It was first made by the German physicist Victor Schumann (1841-1913) and was named after his use in research into far-ultraviolet rays. In ordinary silver halide emulsions, the gelatin used as a binder strongly absorbs ultraviolet rays below about 210 nm, so sensitivity in this wavelength range is extremely low.
