One of the theaters for female dance and play in Edo. It later became the waiting tower of the Ichimuraza Theater. Its origins are unclear, but according to historical records such as the "Kiri Family Koraifu," it is believed to have originated as a female dance tayu that arose from dance tayu in the Izu and Sagami regions. According to the "Gekijo Nenpyo" and other sources, in 1630 (Kan'ei 7), Kiriokura performed female dance at Nakahashi, and in 1661 (Kanbun 1), Kiricho Kiri performed female plays at Kobikicho. A reliable source is the entry for May 6, 1693 (Genroku 6) in the "Matsudaira Yamatonokami Nikki," in which the names of Kiriokura and Kiriotome appear in the record of a female dance performance in Shirakawa. 江戸の女舞,女芝居の劇場の一つ。のち市村座の控櫓(ひかえやぐら)。その起源は明らかではないが,《桐家古来譜》などの由緒書によると,伊豆・相模地方にいた舞太夫より起こった女舞太夫であったらしい。《戯場年表》などによると,1630年(寛永7)に桐大内蔵(きりおおくら)が女舞を中橋で興行し,61年(寛文1)には桐長桐(きりちようきり)が女芝居を木挽町で興行したとされる。確実な資料としては《松平大和守日記》元禄6年(1693)5月6日の条,白河での女舞興行を記すなかに,桐大内蔵,桐乙女の名が見える。
