Solea

...The trigger for this was first the use of stirrups (which of course presupposed the use of a saddle), then the use of horseshoes, and finally the improvement of the horseshoe technique. In Roman times, the solea, in which horseshoes were fitted with shoes and tied to the feet with laces, was known, but this was used as a ceremonial decoration or to treat injured hooves, and was different from horseshoes, which were directly hammered into the horse with iron nails. Both stirrups and horseshoes were introduced from the East during the Germanic migration and the period that followed, through contact with nomadic tribes or through warfare.
