1817‐84 French organic chemist. Born in Strasbourg. Instead of following in his father's footsteps as a Lutheran pastor, he studied medicine at the university of his hometown, receiving his degree in 1843. In 1844 he went to Paris and was recognized by JBA Dumas at the Sorbonne's Faculty of Medicine. He became Dumas' assistant in 1845, lectured in organic chemistry in 1849, became a professor in 1853, and headed the department of chemistry in 1866. In 1874 he was offered a position specifically in organic chemistry at the Sorbonne, which he transferred to from the Faculty of Medicine, and in 1881 he became a member of the Academie des Sciences.
