Tapeworm - Tapeworm

A marine animal belonging to the family Echinodermata of the class Echinodermata of the phylum Annelida. Its name comes from its extremely long snout, which resembles a tapeworm (tapeworm). It is found in Mutsu Bay in Aomori Prefecture, Aburatsubo Bay in Kanagawa Prefecture, Shirahama in Wakayama Prefecture, and Amakusa in Taiho Prefecture. Its body is reddish brown and cylindrical, 40 cm long and 3 cm in diameter, and it burrows vertically into the mud on the seabed where waterweed grows, protruding its snout, about 1.5 m long and 1 cm wide, from the mouth at the front end of its body into the water. The snout has a pale green background with numerous dark brown horizontal stripes, and cilia grow on its surface, which carry small food to its mouth. Just behind the mouth are a pair of hooks typical of Echinodermata. When collecting marine animals, only this long snout was often collected, and for a long time, scholars were puzzled as it was an unidentified animal. However, in 1901 (Meiji 34), the main body was confirmed, and it is now considered one of the rarest animals.

環形動物門ユムシ綱キタユムシ科に属する海産動物。非常に長い吻(ふん)がサナダムシ（条虫類）に似ているところからこの名がある。青森県陸奥(むつ)湾、神奈川県油壺(あぶらつぼ)湾、和歌山県白浜(しらはま)、態本県天草(あまくさ)などに分布する。体は長さ40センチメートル、直径3センチメートルになる赤褐色の円筒形で、アジモの生えている海底の泥の中に垂直に潜り、体の前端の口の側から長さ1.5メートル、幅1センチメートルくらいの吻を水中に出している。吻は淡緑色の地に多数の濃褐色の横縞(よこじま)があり、表面には繊毛が生え、この繊毛で細かい餌(えさ)を口へ運ぶ。口のすぐ後方にはユムシ類特有の1対の鉤(かぎ)がある。海産動物の採集中にしばしばこの長い吻だけが採集され、長い間、正体不明の動物として学者を悩ませたが、1901年（明治34）に本体が確認され、珍奇動物の一つにされている。
