A Joruri Gidayu piece. Historical piece. Two-section. Commonly known as "Gopou." A collaboration between Suga Sensuke and Wakatake Fuemi. It premiered in February 1773 (An'ei 2) at the Ichinosato Theater in Kita-Horie, Osaka. It is based on the Noh play "Yoroboshi," the story of the blind Yoroboshi depicted in the sekkyobushi "Shintokumaru," and the story of a stepmother's love featured in the sekkyobushi "Aigo no Waka," and was directly influenced by the Joruri "Futabareijin Azuma no Hinagata" (1733), a collaboration between Namiki Sosuke and Namiki Josuke. Takayasu Saemon, the lord of Kawachi Province, had two sons, Shuntokumaru and Jiromaru, a son from a concubine. Jiromaru conspired with Tsuboi Heima to kill Shuntokumaru and seize the family headship. Gobo Doshin's daughter Otsuji became Saemon's second wife and was called Tamate Gozen. She made Shuntoku fall in love with her and made him drink poisoned sake, making him ill. Now blind, Shuntoku escapes from home and is hidden in Gobo's hermitage at the west gate of Tennoji Temple with his fiancee, Princess Asaka. Tamate pursues Shuntoku and relentlessly pursues him, so Gobo becomes angry and stabs his daughter. Tamate reveals her true feelings: her illicit love affair and giving him poisoned alcohol were desperate measures to protect Shuntoku from Jiromaru, and she cures his incurable disease with her own blood, the same blood that Tora was born with, and dies satisfied. Although it is set up as a scheme, it is a unique work that mysteriously depicts the stepmother's passionate love, and the second volume, "Gohoanshitsu," is one of the most famous Gidayu pieces. From the end of the Edo period, it was adapted into Kabuki, and Tamate was played one after another by female actors representing the era, passing on this excellent performance to the present day.
