Table - Taiki

Japanese:
Table - Taiki

This is the diary of Fujiwara no Yorinaga, the Minister of the Left. It is also known as Ukai-ki, Kai-ki, Usa-ki, Uji-Safu-ki, or Jisoki. The title Dai-ki comes from the Minister's Chinese name Sandai. Kai (Kaiju, Kaimon) is also another name for the Minister. The diary remains, with some parts missing, from 1136 (Hōen 2), when Yorinaga was 17, to 1155 (Kyuju 2). The writing in this book is clear and unique, supported by Yorinaga's deep knowledge of Japanese and Chinese classics and his literary ability, and goes beyond a simple record of ceremonies to actively discuss Yorinaga's unique judgments on politics and social events. Not only does it tell the story of Yorinaga's own turbulent life, but it also serves as an excellent source of information for learning about the complicated situation within the Sekkanke clan at the time when it was beginning to decline, the structure and human relationships of aristocratic society, the nature of the Toba Insei system and the movements of the aristocrats surrounding it, and the characteristics of the social climate including temples, shrines, samurai, and commoners. The original handwritten version no longer exists, but the oldest is an old manuscript (part of it) from the Kamakura period, and various copies have been handed down up to the Edo period, including the Ugaikisho, an abridged version of the book by Sanjonishi Kineda. Yorinaga also wrote separate notes on particularly important ceremonial-related articles, which have also been handed down in various copies. Included in the Shiryo Taikan and Shiryo Taisei.
