These are the costs required to produce each agricultural product, such as rice, wheat, milk, and pork, and are expressed as the amount per unit of production. Unlike the production costs of industrial products, the production costs of agricultural products are greatly affected by fluctuations in harvest quality due to natural conditions. In good years, production costs are low, and in poor years, production costs are high. In order to eliminate the effects of such fluctuations in harvest quality, it is convenient to break down production costs per unit of product into production costs per unit of planted area and production volume per unit of planted area. In other words, production costs per unit of product = production costs per unit of planted area ÷ production volume per unit of planted area.

米，小麦，牛乳，豚肉など，それぞれの農産物を生産するために必要な費用であり，生産物単位当りの金額で表示される。農産物の生産費は工業製品の生産費と異なり，自然条件による収穫の豊凶変動に大きく左右される。豊年には生産費は低く，凶年には生産費は高い。こうした豊凶変動の影響を除くためには，生産物単位当り生産費を，作付面積単位当り生産費と，作付面積単位当り生産量とに分解してみると便利である。すなわち　生産物単位当り生産費＝作付面積単位当り生産費÷作付面積単位当り生産量である。
