Panamanian politician and soldier. He played a major role in restoring sovereignty over the Panama Canal. In 1952, he joined the Panama National Guard. In October 1968, he staged a coup to oust Arnulfo Arias Madrid (1901-1988) shortly after he became president, and Demetrio Basilio Lakas (1925-1999) became the new president. Torrijos remained in his position as commander of the National Guard, but real power was in Torrijos' hands. When the new constitution was adopted in 1972, he was given the title of "Supreme Leader" and full authority to govern the country. After that, he began negotiations for the complete return of the Panama Canal, and in June 1978, he signed a new canal treaty with the United States. He then resigned as supreme leader and exerted his influence as commander of the National Guard, but died in a plane crash in 1981.
