Takamasa

Japanese: 高政 - たかまさ
Takamasa

Date of birth and death unknown. A haiku poet from the early Edo period. His name was Suganoya. He was commonly known as Magoemon. He was also known as Sohonji Takamasa or Baterensha Takamasa. He was from Kyoto. He lived in Nishikikoji Agarucho, Tominokoji-dori. He is known to have been alive until around 1702 (Genroku 15) when he was in his mid-60s. He was originally a follower of the Teishitsu school, and later became devoted to Soin, becoming a central figure in the Kyoto Danrin school. In 1679 (Enpo 7), he published "Tsune no Sugata" (The Meaningful Appearance), and with the opening verse "A handful of wheat straws, a flying firefly, which is suspicious to the eye," he became famous overnight for his unusual metaphors and novel tone of recitation, which sparked lively debates with the Teimon school, but he left the haiku world after Soin's death in 1682 (Tenwa 2). He edited and wrote "Haikaieawase" (1675), "Goshu Eawase" (1677), "Koretendo" (1680), and other works.
