U2 Incident - The U-2 Incident

On May 1, 1960, a high-performance American reconnaissance plane, a U-2, entered Soviet airspace at high altitude to gather intelligence and was shot down by the Soviet Union. The pilot, Powers, was arrested and confessed that the purpose of the flight was espionage. In response to the Soviet announcement, the United States also acknowledged this fact and revealed that similar flights had been conducted for the past four years. Since the incident occurred just before the East-West summit meeting between the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and France, which was to be held for the first time in five years on May 16, Soviet Premier Khrushchev demanded from the United States a promise to stop spy flights, an apology, and punishment for those responsible, stating that the summit could not begin without these demands. As a result, the summit meeting did not open, and tensions between the East and West became even more serious.

1960年5月1日、アメリカの高性能偵察機U2型機が情報収集のため高高度でソ連領空に侵入し、ソ連によって撃墜された事件。操縦士パワーズは逮捕され、飛行目的がスパイ行為であったことを自白した。ソ連の発表に対しアメリカもこの事実を認め、過去4年にわたって同種の飛行が行われてきたことを明らかにした。事件は、5月16日から5年ぶりに開催されることになっていたアメリカ、イギリス、ソ連、フランスの東西首脳会談の直前に起きたため、ソ連首相フルシチョフはアメリカに対しスパイ飛行の中止の約束、陳謝、責任者の処罰を求め、それなくしては本会談を開始できないと主張した。そのため結局首脳会談は開会に至らず、東西の緊張関係はいっそう深刻化した。
