Born December 22, 1944, in Miami, Florida. Full name Steven Norman Carlton. After playing as a left-handed pitcher at Miami Dade Junior College in Florida, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965. After playing in the minor leagues, he was promoted to the major leagues in 1966. After the 1971 season, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. He won 20 or more games in six seasons (1971-72, 1976-77, 1980, and 1982) and won the National League Cy Young Award (best pitcher award) four times. In 1983, he became the 16th pitcher in major league history to win 300 games, and broke Walter Johnson's career strikeout record of 3,508, which had not been broken for over half a century, becoming the second pitcher to do so after Nolan Ryan. After transferring to the San Francisco Giants in 1986, he achieved 4,000 strikeouts and announced his retirement, but soon retracted the announcement. He continued to play for several teams until 1988, and extended his career strikeout record to 4,136. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.

Carleton, Guy, 1st Baron Dorchester

Born: September 3, 1724, Tyrone, Ireland
Died November 10, 1808. Stubbings was a British soldier and colonial administrator. He joined the army in 1742 and participated in the British invasion of Quebec in 1759. He returned home after being wounded, but was sent to Quebec as Governor in 1868. He adopted a lenient policy towards French Canadians who had come under British rule, and brought about the Quebec Act of 1874. His policies were successful, and the Quebec colony sided with Britain during the American Revolution. In 1876, he was appointed Baron Dorchester for his efforts in protecting Quebec from the invasion of the American Revolutionary Army, and in 1886 he became Governor of all the North American colonies. He returned to Britain when the Canada Act came into force in 1891, but was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada, a position he held from 1893 to 1896, after which he retired from public life.
