French poet. Born in Chartres. He was the favorite of King Henry III as a court poet. His light and elegant style of poetry, influenced by Italian Neo-Petrarchism, stole the popularity of Ronsard, and he was renowned as the greatest poet of his time until the appearance of Malherbe, and his "Early Poems" (Les premières œuvres) (1573) was reprinted many times. He was a bridge between the Pleiade school and classicism, and it can be said that he digested the style of poetry that came before him and passed it on to the 17th century. In his later years, he retired to the monastery of Beumport in Normandy, and devoted himself exclusively to religious poetry and the translation of the "Psalms".
