...This fishing method, which appeared in the late 17th century and early 18th century, spread to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, and flourished while causing friction with coastal fishing in each place. These beam trawl sailing ships, called smacks, had a gross tonnage of 30 to 80 tons, a crew of five, and made voyages of 7 to 10 days. The smack fleet promoted the development of the North Sea.
