1835‐1910 One of the leading novelists of post-Civil War American realism. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Hemingway said that "all modern American literature originates from one book, Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," and this masterpiece established the truly American literary tradition. Born in an unnamed pioneer village in southwestern Missouri, far from the cultural traditions of the Old Continent, he described the unique experiences and character of the American people in fresh American English.
