Kanoko - Kanoko

Japanese:
Kanoko - Kanoko

This refers to Kanoko mochi (rice cake with kanoko paste). It is made by wrapping mochi in red bean paste and topping the surface with red beans boiled in syrup. It got its name from its appearance, which resembles the spots of kanoko dyeing. When mochi is wrapped in red bean paste and topped with white beans boiled in syrup, it is called Kyo-kanoko. During the Horeki era (1751-64), Edo actor Arashi Otohachi started selling it in Ningyocho and it became popular. Otohachi's store continued until the Kansei era (1789-1801), and was later taken over by Ota Ichizaemon, the head musician.
