Yoshikata Kiyohara

Year of birth: Unknown. A Confucian scholar during the Northern and Southern Courts period. Son of Kiyohara Muneki. His pen name was Bun'o. He was appointed Daizen-daifu, Chuzei-no-kami, and Suisei-no-masa, and was subsequently appointed Shonagon and Daigaiki, and became a Myokyo Hakase. He was permitted to enter the palace, and established a family school as a tutor to Emperors Go-Kogon, Go-En'yu, and Go-Komatsu. He shaved his head in 1397 (Oei 4). His posthumous name was Tsunemune. He lectured on Confucian scriptures based on old commentaries and added new ones, and was adept at lecturing on the Kobunshoshu and Maoshi, and was the first to recite the Zhao-annotated Mencius's Annotated Compendium. The Analects of Confucius written by Emperor Shoko is said to have been a lecture by his son Yoritsune, but the theory goes that it was Ryoken, and it is valuable as an early excerpt. In October 1444 (Bun'an 1), on the thirteenth anniversary of his death, he was posthumously awarded the rank of Junior Third Rank.

南北朝期の儒学者。清原宗季の子。号は文翁。大膳大夫,主税頭,主水正を経て少納言,大外記に任じられ明経博士となり,内昇殿を許され,後光厳・後円融・後小松天皇の歴代侍読として家学を興し,応永4(1397)年剃髪。法名常宗。古注を根幹とし新注を加味して儒典を講じ,『古文尚書』と『毛詩』の講釈を得意とし,趙註孟子の篇叙を初めて講誦した。称光天皇宸筆の論語抄は子の頼季の講とされるが,良賢の説によっており,初期抄物の形態として貴重である。十三回忌の文安1(1444)年10月に従三位を追贈された。
