801‐865 Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen, Saint. During the reign of Louis I, the Benedictine monk Ansgar, who had been educated in Corby, France, was sent to Hamburg, which became the base for Charlemagne's expansion into Northern Europe. Ansgar engaged in missionary work in Sweden and Denmark, building churches in commercial centers in each region, and became the first archbishop of Hamburg in 831. He established a collegiate school and led an ascetic life, earning him the nickname "Apostle of the North." However, due to attacks by the Danes, he retreated to the Bishopric of Bremen in 847-848.
