Originally it was a tag attached to luggage etc. In the computer/information and communications world, it refers to additional information attached to data. It indicates the meaning and content of the data. HTMLA format for writing commands and comments that describe the behavior of a homepage within an HTML document. Enclosing text in tags determines the design when displayed in an Internet browser. Creating a web page depends on how well you use HTML tags. Office 2000 made it possible to handle office documents as HTML by saving detailed information unique to office documents as tags, which HTML tags cannot fully handle. DTPLayout software such as Adobe PageMaker and QuarkXPress support tagged text, and using tagged text can make layouts more efficient.

もともとは荷物などに付ける札のこと。コンピュータ/情報通信の世界では、データに対して付ける付加情報を指す。データの意味、内容などを表わす。HTMLHTML文書内で、ホームページの動きをあらわす命令やコメントを書き込むための書式。テキストをタグではさむことで、インターネットブラウザーで表示するときのデザインなどが決まる。ウェブページを作成することは、HTMLのタグをいかに使いこなすかにかかっている。オフィス2000ではHTMLのタグでは対応しきれないオフィス文書独自の詳細な情報をタグとして保存することで、オフィス文書をHTMLとして扱えるようになった。DTPAdobe PageMakerやQuarkXPressなどのレイアウトソフトではタグ付きテキストをサポートしており、タグ指定したテキストを利用するとレイアウトの効率化が図れる。
