Japanese: アゲハ（英語表記）Papilio xuthus

Lepidoptera, Papilionidae. Also known as the swallowtail. Forewing length 40-60mm. Wings are black with many yellowish-white spots, striped pattern, and the hindwings have a black band on the inner outer edge with rows of blue-purple spots. The hindwings also have long tails. There are spring and summer types, the former being much smaller than the latter. They appear several times a year. The larvae feed on the leaves of plants in the Rutaceae family, preferring Japanese pepper, trifoliate orange, and mandarin orange. The larvae have bird dropping-like spots up to the 4th instar, but turn yellowish-green at the final instar. They overwinter as pupae. Most commonly seen throughout Japan, and widely distributed in East Asia. Similar to the common macaque swallowtail, but generally distinguishable by pale yellow parts, a non-black base of the forewing, and a yellow-and-black stripe at the base of the middle lobe.

鱗翅目アゲハチョウ科。別名ナミアゲハともいう。前翅長 40～60mm。翅は黒地に黄白色の斑紋が多く，だんだら模様で，後翅の外縁内側の黒色帯の中には青紫色斑が並ぶ。また後翅には長い尾状突起がある。春型と夏型があり，前者は後者よりはるかに小さい。年数回発生する。幼虫はミカン科の植物の葉を食べ，サンショウ，カラタチ，ミカンなどを好む。幼虫は4齢までは鳥糞に似た斑紋をもつが，終齢では黄緑色になる。蛹で越冬する。日本全土に最も普通にみられ，東アジアに広く分布する。キアゲハに似るが，一般に黄色部が淡色で，前翅基部が全面黒色にならず，中室基半部も黄と黒の縞模様になっているので区別される。
