Ebara Soroku - Ebara Soroku

Japanese: 江原素六 - えばらそろく
Ebara Soroku - Ebara Soroku

He was a Shogunate official in the late Edo period, and a politician and educator in the Meiji and Taisho periods. He was born in Edo as the son of the bannerman Ebara Gengo. He studied Western-style artillery and became an officer in the Shogunate army, fighting against the new government forces in Shimousa Province during the Boshin War. He moved to Numazu when the Tokugawa family was transferred to Suruga, and was involved in the management of the Numazu Military Academy, which the Shizuoka Domain had established to train army officers. After the abolition of the domains and the establishment of prefectures, he worked to provide employment for samurai and promote industry in the Numazu region and Shizuoka Prefecture, and also devoted himself to education, serving as the principal of Shizuoka Normal School and Numazu Middle School. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1890 (Meiji 23), and thereafter worked for many years as a representative belonging to the Liberal Party and the Rikken Seiyukai Party, becoming a member of the House of Peers in 1912. In Tokyo, he founded the private Azabu Middle School, and served as its principal for the rest of his life. He also became chairman of the Tokyo Young Men's Association, and was involved in a wide range of social causes, including the temperance movement, the anti-prostitution movement, and programs to reform delinquent youths, and was a prominent figure in the Christian world.
