Even before the rise of Islam, Jews (Arabic: Yahud) had settled widely along the Mediterranean coast, especially in North Africa, centered around Alexandria, and in the Arabian Peninsula, especially in Yemen, as well as in Ceylon and India, where they engaged in trade and worked in handicrafts. With the establishment of Islam, they, along with Christians, were considered "People of the Book" and placed under the protection of the ruling power as dhimmis, on the condition that they paid a certain poll tax (jizya).
