Justinos (English spelling)

Justinos (English spelling)

Apologist for the early Christian church. Later Tertullian called him "philosopher and martyr." He was of Greek pagan origin in Palestine. After exploring various philosophies such as Stoicism, Peripateticism, and Pythagoreanism, he resonated with Platonism, but eventually converted to Christianity after meeting an old man in Ephesus. He found true philosophy in Christ on the cross. He traveled around the country as a teacher and opened a school in Rome. He was martyred along with six of his disciples during the reign of Junius Rusticus (c. 100-170). He developed a Logos-Christology based on the Stoic theory of the seed logos, and served as a bridge between classical Greek philosophy and Christianity. His works include two Apologiae (Apologiae) and Dialogus cum Tryphone Judaeo (Dialogus with Tryphon the Jew).
