A legend about the legendary island of Atlantis, which appears in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias. Located in the ocean outside the Pillars of Hercules (the Strait of Gibraltar), it was a kind of terrestrial paradise, but 9,000 years ago, before the time of Solon, it was defeated in a battle with Athens and then sunk into the sea in a single day and night. Its existence and location have been the subject of debate since ancient times, but the Canary Islands and Santorini are also sometimes compared to Atlantis. As a perfect subject for movies, novels, and popular occultism, it remains as popular today as the legend of Mu.

プラトンの対話編《ティマイオス》《クリティアス》に現れる伝説的な大島アトランティスAtlantisをめぐる伝説。〈ヘラクレスの柱〉（ジブラルタル海峡）の外の大海にあり，一種の地上楽園であったが，ソロンの時代をさかのぼること9000年の昔，アテナイと戦って敗れ，のち島は一昼夜で海に没したという。古来その存在と位置は論議の的だが，カナリア諸島，サントリニ島などがアトランティスに比されたりもする。映画，小説，俗流オカルティズムの格好の主題として，今日でもムー伝説と並び人気が高い。
