A structure that juts out from a mountain cliff or a river bank. It is also called kengai-zukuri or cliff-style. Famous examples include the main hall of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto City and the Sanbutsu-ji Temple Nageire-do Hall in Misasa, Tottori Prefecture. Kiyomizu-dera Temple is known for its high stage with a kengai-zukuri structure. This hall enshrines Kannon Bodhisattva as its principal image. According to the scriptures, Kannon Bodhisattva lives in the mountains of Putaraku in the South Seas. Therefore, Kannon Halls are often built on the middle slopes of famous mountains in imitation of Mount Putaraku, and are often built with a kengai-zukuri structure with a raised floor. The Sanbutsu-ji Temple Nageire-do Hall was also built with a kengai-zukuri structure on the slope of a rock cave to enshrine Zao Gongen. In general, suspended buildings have crossbeams running vertically and horizontally under the floor to secure the pillars, a base is placed on top of the pillars, and the main body is built on top of that.
