University of Strasbourg (English name: University of Strasbourg)

University of Strasbourg (English name: University of Strasbourg)

A university in Strasbourg, France. Its origins date back to an academy founded in 1566, but it was granted university privileges in 1621. It was temporarily closed due to the French Revolution (1789). As a result of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), this region became German territory, and it was called Kaiser Wilhelm University from 1872 to 1918. During World War II (1939-1945), it was evacuated to Clermont-Ferrand in the south of France. After the war, it developed steadily and became a representative university in eastern France, with seven faculties (Catholic Theology, Protestant Theology, Political Science and Economics, Medicine, Science, Humanities, and Pharmacy). In 1968, the higher education reform divided it into three universities: University I (Louis Pasteur University), University II (Humanities University), and University III (Robert Schuman University), but they were reunited in 2009. The university has 2,759 faculty members and 46,627 students (2014-2015 academic year).
