This raised suspicions that Jugurtha had bought the nobility, igniting the anti-nobility sentiment of the Roman people that had been simmering since the suppression of the reforms of the Gracchi brothers, and led to the rise of the popular faction, who called for the clarification of the suspicions and the continuation of the war. Jugurtha was summoned to Rome as a witness, but returned home without being questioned, and the war resumed. He fought well against the Roman army under Metellus Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus and Marius, with the support of peasants and nomads on the frontier, but was betrayed by his ally, the King of Mauretania, and handed over to Rome (105 BC) and executed. After the war, a pro-Roman royal family was placed on the throne, a large number of veterans of Marius' subordinates were colonized in the kingdom, and Numidia's independence became a mere formality. …
