Slit-faced bat (Mizokomata)

Japanese: ミゾコウモリ(溝蝙蝠) - ミゾコウモリ（英語表記）slit‐faced bat

A general term for mammals in the order Chiroptera, family Nycteridae. These insectivorous bats are so named because they have a deep groove-like depression in the center of their face. They are endemic to the Old World and consist of one genus, with 12 species in Africa and two species found in southern Myanmar, Java, Borneo, and Timor Island. They are closely related to the Old World Alatropoda, and some consider them to be in the same family. Forearm length 3-6 cm, head and body length 4-9 cm, weight 10-30 g. Tail is the same length as head and body length. Ears longer than head, connected at their base by folds of skin.

翼手目ミゾコウモリ科Nycteridaeの哺乳類の総称。虫食性のコウモリで，顔の中央部に深い溝状のくぼみをもつのでこの名がある。旧世界の特産で1属からなり，アフリカに12種，ミャンマー南部からジャワ，ボルネオ，チモール島に2種がある。旧世界のアラコウモリ科に近縁で，両者を同じ科とする見解もある。前腕長3～6cm，頭胴長4～9cm，体重10～30g。尾は頭胴長と同長。耳介は頭より長く，その基部は皮膚のひだで連なる。
