Born: August 13, 1802. Chatard Died: August 22, 1850. Austrian poet from the Vienna area. His real name was Nikolaus Franz Niembsch, Edler von Strehlenau. Born into a family of minor Hungarian nobility, he studied philosophy, law, and medicine at the University of Vienna and other institutions. He later became acquainted with Swabian poets such as Uhland and Kellner in Stuttgart. He traveled to the United States in 1832, but returned to the United States soon after in despair. He made a new start as a poet, but his life was full of suffering, including the early death of his father, poverty, and several unhappy love affairs. He went insane in 1844 and died in a psychiatric hospital. The lyric poems contained in Gedichte (1832) and Neuere Gedichte (38) mostly deal with themes of loneliness, melancholy, impermanence, and decline.
