...The Pure Land sects that practiced Ikko-sect only were broadly called Ikko-shu. Specifically, the inscription in Tengu-soshi (1296) states, "They are called Ikko-shu, and hate those who devote themselves to other Buddhas besides Amida Tathagata, and envy those who make pilgrimages to Shinto shrines," and refers to Ippen's Jishu as Ikko-shu. Also, the Ippen-ryu Gi Junipa Ryakuki states, "Ippen Shonin's disciple, one of the Shonin's disciples, built the Ikko-ryu Gi at Banba Renge-ji Temple in Eshu," and refers to Ikko-shu followers of Ikko-shu as Ikko-shu....

...Meanwhile, the Kaga Shugo forces had split into two factions several times since the mid-15th century and had been fighting for control. Under these circumstances, in 1874-75, some of the Shugo forces and the Ikko-shu rallied together local lords, peasants, and temple and shrine forces to launch an uprising (Sokoku-ikki) to overthrow the opposing forces. This Bunmei-ikki was the first Ikko-ikki in the Hokuriku region, as it included the Ikko-shu as its main force.
