It is a type of mineral called cordierite, and looks like a hexagonal cherry blossom petal. Its size is 0.5-1cm in diameter and 2-3cm in length. Its production near Hiedano in Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture has been known since the Edo period, and it has been designated a natural monument (Hiedano cordierite pseudocrystals). Its origin is crystals (pseudohexagonal twins) that formed within the rock when granite was thermally metamorphosed into slate, which turned it into hornfels. These crystals weathered to reveal the cherry blossom pattern. [Kobayashi Iwao] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
