Yugi Palace

Japanese:
Yugi Palace

The palace of Emperor Shotoku was located in Yuge-go, Wakae-gun, Kawachi Province. Yuge-go was the birthplace of Dokyo, who was favored by Emperor Shotoku. During his visit to Kii in 765 (Tenpyo Jingo 1), Emperor Shotoku set up a temporary palace here and stopped by to pay a visit to Yuge-ji Temple. At that time, Dokyo, who held the position of Minister of State and Zen Master, was given the new position of Grand Minister of State and Zen Master. Four years later, in 769 (Jingo Keiun 3), immediately after Dokyo's succession to the throne due to a divine oracle from Usa Hachiman was prevented by Wake no Kiyomaro and others, the Emperor visited Yugi Palace again, set up a temporary shop at Ryuge-ji Temple, and gathered the townspeople of Kawachi. Yugi Palace was named Saikyo, and the Kawachi Province where it was located was renamed Kawachishiki. In the following year, 770 (the 1st year of the Hōki era), the houses of peasants in the three counties of Ogata, Wakae, and Takayasu, which were within the territory of the Yugi Palace, were purchased, and the Yugi Grand Priest was appointed as the construction chief priest to proceed with construction. The Emperor also visited the palace, but he fell ill during this time and passed away after returning to Heijo-kyō, and it is thought that the palace fell into decline after that. It is said that the original site was around Yaogi in Yao City, Osaka Prefecture, but the remains are unclear.
