Prince Yuge

Japanese: 弓削皇子 - ゆげのみこ
Prince Yuge
Year of death: 21st July 699 (21st August 699)
Year of birth: Unknown
A member of the imperial family in the late 7th century. The son of Emperor Tenmu and Emperor Tenchi's daughter, Princess Oe. The sixth prince. His younger brother was Prince Naga. According to the biography of Prince Kazuno in the Kaifu-mo, after the death of Emperor Tenmu's first son, Prince Takichi (696), Prince Yuge argued for the succession of the throne by brothers at the meeting of ministers to select the crown prince, but was defeated by Prince Kazuno and others who supported the succession by Prince Karu, the son of Prince Kusakabe (whose mother later became Empress Jito), who argued that succession by brothers would cause chaos. Prince Karu later became Emperor Mommu.
