A beautiful perennial plant of the lily family that produces brush-like white flowers in spikes (illustration). The Japanese name is a reference to the white tepals, which resemble white threads. The scientific name, chiono, means "like snow," and graphis, means "brush," and is also named after the flower. The flower stalk is 25-65 cm tall and bears sparse linear leaves. There are six tepals, of which about four are linear and open, and are white and very conspicuous. Flowers appear in May and June. The flower stalk is single, with many evergreen basal leaves at the base. The underground stem is short and either erect or ascending. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
