An ethnic minority group of just over 6,000 people found in the mountainous region of northwest Laos. They speak the Lamet language, which belongs to the Mon-Khmer family of Austroasiatic languages. They practice slash-and-burn agriculture, in which land is cultivated for one year and then left fallow for 12 to 15 years, and grow glutinous rice, foxtail millet, cassava, taro, yams, and other crops. They live in villages with an average of 14 to 15 houses on the plains between the mountains. A men's meeting hall is set up in the central square of the village. Shifting cultivation work is carried out collectively, and all the land is held in common. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
