Yubetsu River

Japanese: 湧別川 - ゆうべつがわ
Yubetsu River

It flows through northeastern Hokkaido and empties into the Sea of Okhotsk. It is a first-class river. It originates near Kitami Pass in Engaru Town under the jurisdiction of the Okhotsk General Bureau, joins the Maruseppu River, Murii River, and Ikutahara River, and flows into the sea in Yubetsu Town. It is 87 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 1,480 square kilometers. The upper reaches are forested areas of the Kitami Mountains, and the wide alluvial plains in the middle reaches of Engaru Town and Yubetsu Town are mainly used as farmland. A military settlement was established in the Kamiyubetsu area of Yubetsu Town, and peppermint cultivation at the end of the Meiji period promoted the development of the entire basin. Salmon and trout can be seen migrating upstream.
