The capital of the Republic of Maldives in the northern Indian Ocean. A population of 63,000 (1995) lives on a small island of about 2 km2. Administratively, it is divided into four villages, but the entire island forms part of the urban landscape. All major national institutions are concentrated in Male, and it is a distribution center for marine products, including Maldivian fish (dried bonito). An international airport, which opened in 1981, is located on the neighboring island of Hulule, where immigration control is carried out. Many foreign tourists fly directly from Hulule to islands with tourist facilities and do not stop in the capital. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
