… In England, it was the Puritans who inherited the reform ideas of Luther and Calvin, and paved the way for modernization by thoroughly reforming the Church of England, which had not been complete. R. Brown, John Greenwood (?-1593), and Henry Barrow (c. 1550-93) left the Church of England and became independents. They rejected the conference-based Presbyterianism, upheld the autonomy of each church, and sought to realize a "universal priesthood" without distinction between clergy and laity. This became the basis of the Congregational Church. …
