Ikebana artist. First head of the Sogetsu school. Real name Koichi. Born in Tokyo. Studied under his father, the ikebana artist Teshigahara Wafu Kyuji, and became independent in 1927. The following year he held the first Sogetsu school exhibition at the Senbikiya Gallery, where he attracted attention for his graceful throwing and free-form moribana arrangements. In 1930, he created the Shinko Ikebana Manifesto with Shigemori Mirei and others, advocating liberation from traditional forms. After World War II, he presented ikebana as a plastic art using stone, iron, and other materials, and it was widely introduced overseas. In 1966, he became the first chairman of the Japan Ikebana Art Association. His representative works include Ode to Reconstruction (1949), Black Sunflowers (1951), Kikansha (1951), and the Kojiki series he produced in his later years. The second head of the school, Kasumi (1932-1980), was her eldest daughter, and the third head of the school, film director Hiroshi (1927-2001), was her eldest son. → Related topics Avant-garde calligraphy | Sogetsu Art Center | Hiroshi Teshigahara | Yukio Nakagawa Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
